Stop Union Busting at The Catholic Spirit

Archbishop John Nienstedt has decided to kick out the union that has represented workers at The Catholic Spirit for nearly 50 years. The archbishop is taking this action on July 1 despite church teachings that address the value of labor unions and collective bargaining in a socially-just workplace.

The Minnesota Newspaper Guild Typographical Union organized workers at The Catholic Spirit in 1965 with the blessing of former Archbishop John Roach and at the invitation of former newspaper editor Bernard Casserly. Now, Archbishop Nienstedt has decided the dedicated employees of the newspaper of the Archdiocese of St. Paul & Minneapolis no longer deserve union representation and he plans to move their work to a non-union communications department. The archbishop has denied requests from union employees at The Catholic Spirit and others to continue recognition of the bargaining unit.

Tell Archbishop Nienstedt his action conflicts with church teachings and cannot stand.
