An Evening of Action By Members of Invest In Minnesota

May 14 2010

May 13, 2010--WHAT: An evening of action at the Capitol by members of Invest in Minnesota, a coalition of faith, labor, and nonprofit organizations, united in support of raising revenue fairly.  Recognizing the progressive tax increase passed by the legislature on Monday and this critical moment in continued negotiations to address budget shortfalls, we will gather to demonstrate our support for a balanced approach.   Revenue raised fairly must be a significant part of a balanced approach to resolving the state’s budget shortfall.

WHERE:   Outside the House chambers, second floor, State Capitol

WHEN:  Thursday, May 13, 2010, 5:00 p.m., program 6:30 p.m.

WHO:  Speakers:   Marcia Avner, Public Policy Director, Minnesota Council of Nonprofits – “Minnesota has an opportunity to move on a path to stability and prosperity.  We need courageous action to ensure that Minnesota is a good home for all people.”

Rev. Peg Chemberlin, Executive Director, Minnesota Council of Churches, and President, National Council of Churches – “I call on Governor Pawlenty and the lawmakers to have a vision of a prosperous Minnesota and to hold that vision of prosperity that is shared!  That is justice, that is the common good, that is the people we are called to be.  The Minnesota Department of Revenue’s own data show that the poorest households pay the highest percent of their income in total Minnesota taxes.  While the wealthiest only pay 10%. Minnesota’s tax system is already geared to favor those that have the most.”

Shar Knutson, President, Minnesota  AFL-CIO -  “The vote to override is a simple choice.  Lawmakers either stand with school kids and the middle class or the rich.”

Eliot Seide, Executive Director, AFSCME Council 5
