Hello to all. I’m Ken McInnis the new President of the Retiree Council. With your help I hope I can live up to the high standards set by my predecessors. The Council’s twenty-two year history is one of participation, inclusion and forward thinking that will continue to leave its mark on Minnesota and the Labor movement as we move ahead.
On behalf of the Council I want to thank Bill Moore for his years of service both to the Retiree Council and the Minnesota AFL-CIO. With his leadership the Council has adopted a Strategic Plan that will guide us as we ORGANIZE retirees and work to protect and expand the freedom and benefits we currently enjoy. I ask for your help in attaining those goals. I also want to welcome Louise Sundin as our Vice President, elected at the Convention. I look forward to working with her and all Council Board members in implementing our Strategic Plan.
We have just completed our Twenty-Second Annual Convention. I want to extend a yuge THANK YOU to all the volunteers who made the 2018 Convention a great success! With one hundred ten (110) retiree delegates and guests in attendance we heard from numerous AFL-CIO endorsed candidates for election in this year’s General Election.
Early voting has already started so please make sure you VOTE! Carol Freeman our Election Work Coordinator will be asking you to help with phoning, door knocking or writing postcards. PLEASE give us some of your time. We don’t want to end up like Iowa or Wisconsin !
At this year’s convention Andrew Virden, Director of Census Operations and Engagement, Minnesota State Demographic Center, presented a program on the 2020 Census and the importance of getting the count correct. You can read details in Myrna Doran’s article.
Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross has directed the addition of an untested and unnecessary question to the 2020 Census Form asking the citizenship status of every person in America. You can see the increased chance of an undercount if this question remains. The Board wrote Secretary Ross requesting the question be removed. It’s not too late for you to write with the same request to: Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, U.S. Department of Commerce 1401 Constitution Ave NW Washington, DC 20230. Information on the risks involved in an undercount can be found here: https://civilrights.org/census/
The Convention also changed the bylaws to: 1) hold a convention in the same year(s) the Minnesota AFL-CIO has a convention; 2) hold a conference with a Board election in the year(s) with no convention; 3) allow Labor retiree organizations not affiliated with the AFL-CIO to affiliate with the Council provided they meet certain criteria; 4) specify the Vice President to fill the unexpired term of the President when a permanent vacancy in the office of President exists.
Lots of important items for your consideration. Please join me in ORGANIZING retirees and working together to protect and expand our freedom and benefits! Have a wonderful day!
In solidarity, Ken McInnis,President
