The Southeast Minnesota Area Labor Council (SEMNALC) includes 16 counties in Congressional District #1. CD-1 Representative Tim Walz is running for Governor of Minnesota and has resigned his congressional seat. Pretty good guy, Tim is. As I write this there are 8 Democrats inside the bouncy house jumping vigorously as candidates for Minnesota’s First District. The Rochester paper has reported some unfortunate allegations about some of the candidates and perhaps a bit of friction within the political circle of candidates. I don’t know if that’s true or not. It’s too early for political intrigue.
Four of the SEMNALC’s counties are in CD-2. “Chasen” Lewis is the CD-2 Rep. You know that guy. He is a graduate of the Kline School of Disappearances. He is the Congressman everybody is looking for except on his payday. That last time I saw him he was jousting for picture position behind Trump in the Rose Garden. Proud “Chasen” was snickering thinking of how he screwed retirees by eliminating basic health care provisions of the Affordable Care Act.
Currently we have 2 CD-2 Democratic candidates running to represent us. One has run before and lost by only 1.8% points. Her name is Angie Craig. We didn’t get enough of our folks out.
Mayo Health System is a force to be understood not feared. Our current State government executives, a few legislators and progressive citizen groups are trying to rein in Mayo’s corporate power. The taxpayers of Minnesota gave Mayo over ½ billion dollars to help them become a Designated Medical Center. Mayo doesn’t understand Minnesotans can’t be pushed around by overbearing health care institutions whose success depends on us…the consumer.
AFL-CIO election strategy sessions continue for labor and our progressive friends. We face some serious state-altering possibilities. Without a friend as Governor, we will become “right-to-work”. Decent public sector worker wages and benefits and state project labor agreements for the “trades” will be a faint memory. Work places will be unsafe. Discrimination will increase.
There is much to do. The GOP is active. We have the numbers. Let’s get active- outwork them!
